The Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory was opened in 1925 by Riddell Angell and Cora Phelps, two women who were Michigan natives but spent their winters in Daytona Beach. After World War II broke out, the women pulled up stakes in Michigan and decided to focus all their chocolate-making efforts in Daytona. Over 80 years later, after several different owners and locations around the city, Angell & Phelps continues to be the standard for excellent chocolates in the area.
The Resinger family, who bought the company from the two ladies in the 1950s, expanded the operation significantly until the present owners -- the Smith Family -- took over in the 1970s and moved the main operation to its present location on Beach Street. Southern Living Magazine,among others, have noted the exquisite quality of the chocolate after all the years.
Accommodations nearby include the Palmetto Hotel (336 S. Palmetto), the Bayview Hotel (124 Orange), and the Live Oaks Inn on South Beach Street, known for its excellent location. The Days Inn on Ridgewood is a budget option in a more hectic part of town.
