This is the second-largest urban area in Switzerland and its third most populous city. Basel holds an annual carnival lasting three days called Farnacht and it starts on the first Monday after Ash Wednesday. It is a colorful affair but not nearly as loud and raucous as carnivals in places like Rio of New Orleans. It does get quite louder on day 2 as brass bands bellow out catchy tunes from 8pm onwards and as a whole it a jolly occasion that deserves a visit.

If you have an appreciation for architecture, you will love it in Basel. The city center has a lovely medieval feel to it but even the newer structures leave you in awe. The Rhine divides the city – the northern part has an old town feel and in the southern part is where things become more modern. This is where you will find an abundance of trendy bars, clubs, and venues where the nightlife is positively booming although the old town also has a thriving restaurant and café culture and the streets here are lined with outdoor eateries. In the old town, it will take you a whole day if not more if you want to see all the beautiful attractions and walking along the cobbled streets will allow you to see more. There are gothic cathedrals, churches, museums, sculptures, structures and towers to take you back in time and if this is not your scene, be plucked right back into the present as you shop till you drop in Basel’s many trendy stores. Visit the local zoo or take a trip along the Rhine in a boat the locals call a faehri.

If you are a little bit more active you can go for a run in Basel’s beautiful parks, you can swim in the Rhine or in the several outdoor pools, there are a few ice skating rinks and rock climbing is also on offer.

If you are traveling on a budget there are quite a few youth hostels and back packers to overnight at. Got a little bit more money?
