The clean, efficient city of Zurich, is the financial capital of Switzerland, and is also the city with the highest standard of living in the world.
Zurich is the biggest city (not the capital, though) in Switzerland and is situated on Lake Zurich where the lake meets the Limmat River in the north of the country.
It is the financial center of Switzerland and also houses the biggest and busiest airport – no wonder it is the first place visitors come when thy come to Switzerland and is often refer to as “the portal to the Alps.”
The city has been ranked over and over again as the city with the highest standard of living in the world as it is so clean and efficient. If you want to visit being able to speak German, French and Italian would be beneficial but English can also get you from A to B. The public transport system is very efficient and whether you decide to travel by bus, train or tram you will find most reliable and comfortable. There are also boats that take you along the lake and rivers.
Shopping is a favorite pass time for tourists and there are more than enough shops to choose from. You can also take a nineteenth century funicular called the Polybahn up the very steep hill for a spectacular view. Take a trip on the Zurichsee with an old steamboat or go up Uetliberg that is a hill overlooking the whole of Zurich. Take a train up or if you are up for it, hike up and enjoy the 360 degree view from the viewing tower. It is quite high so if you’re suffering from vertigo it might not be a good idea. From here, you can go on the planetary walk which is an eight-mile walk along the ridge with models of all the planets along the way.
By now you’ve probably built up a hunger and thirst so lucky for you Zurich boasts with over 2000 bars and restaurants to cater to your culinary needs with treats from all over the world. Choose from casual eateries to the absolute trendy and up-market, the choice seems endless. The nightlife is a booming one and again there is quite the array of locations to choose from.
Of course, where else do you go to get the best of what the health and pampering world has to offer than Switzerland so go and relax at any of the spa locations in Zurich? If you want something more physical, bicycles are free to rent from May to October, there are ice skating rinks aplenty, and Alpamare Waterpark is the biggest indoor water park in Europe.
Moreover, of course there is skiing. Zurich is a place of many events and festivals like the annual street parade that is currently the biggest open air techno rave in Europe. Swiss National Day on the first of August is also a great festivity with fireworks out on the lake.
If you love the theater, you are in the right place and world famous operas often perform here in addition to regular film and music events held at the theaters, and where else can you buy “cheap” Swiss watches, army knives and, of course, genuine Swiss chocolate?
