Situated at the north of Hainan island, Haikou is the capital of Hainan Province of the People's Republic of China

Haikou, the Capital of Hainan Province of the People’s Republic of China and is located north of Hainan. Haikou happens to be the largest city on the island and is also known as Meilan. The city is known for its busy nature as it is the pinnacle of trade as well as a well-known tourist destination.

Major events that occur in the city are festivals and cultural celebrations. One such event is the Hainan International Coconut Festival. This is an annual festival which is held late March and sometimes in April and it’s the largest festival in the province. The event features folk customs, sports and also economic issues and trade. Another event is the Huanhua Festival also known as the Flower Exchanging Festival and takes place on January 15th. The day’s celebration is about exchanging flowers and praying for a happy life in the coming year.

Haikou, however, is also known for its scenic beauty with exquisite beaches and ancient sites. The Wugong Temple, Hairui Tomb and the Xiuying Emplacement are just a few reminders of the past. Additional attractions are the theme parks, elegant restaurants, exciting nightlife, top class hotels and shopping centers. A major historic site nevertheless, is the Hainan Provincial Museum of Haikou which was completed in 2008. The museum is home to national treasures such as items made from bronze, pottery, gold and terracotta. These works of art are believed to demonstrate symbols of the power of past rulers and they also showcase the craftsmanship of their creators.
