Nicknamed the Venice of North America because of the canal systems, Fort Lauderdale has much to offer the visitor.
The canal systems in Fort Lauderdale have earned it the nickname ‘the Venice of North America.’ It’s also a bit of a millionaire’s playground, with beaches and boats featuring high on the list of attractions.
The city is easy to reach, via either Fort Lauderdale or Miami Airports, and Amtrak trains, Greyhound Buses, and a few cruise liners are other choices as far as getting to Fort Lauderdale are concerned.
Of course, the beach is the big attraction in Fort Lauderdale, and by far the most popular section of beach is the area known as the ‘Strip.’ Here you’ll find white sand, warm water, and the iconic bar, the Elbo Room, which featured in the film ‘Where the Boys Are.’ Other beach side attractions are available at Bonnet House, and Beach Place, which is actually several bars, restaurants, and a Marriott hotel.
If you do find time to explore culture in Fort Lauderdale, then there are several options, ranging from the Broward Centre for the Performing Arts to the Old Fort Lauderdale Village and Museum, or venture a little further afield to the Florida Everglades Holiday Park, or the beautiful Butterfly World.
The city is varied, with sports, shopping, arts, culture and history all mingling with the beach, and there’s really something for everyone here. Likewise, hotel accommodation varies, but there are some excellent choices like the Embassy Suites, which is right in the centre of Fort Lauderdale, and the Westin Beach Resort, which as the name suggests, is right on the water.
