The Kentucky Derby, and the fesitval that goes with it, is one of the main attractions, in April and May, in the city of Louisville, Kentucky.
Louisville, Kentucky, on the Ohio River, is probably most famous as the home of the Kentucky Derby, and the Louisville Slugger, the official Major League Baseball Bat. There’s a lot more in Louisville that’s interesting though, and you’re sure to find something exciting and interesting to do.
Of course, the best time to visit Louisville is in April and May, when the Kentucky Derby, and the festival that goes along with it, happens. The Derby itself will fascinate lovers of horse racing, but about a week before, you can watch the Great Balloon Race, or take part in the Mini Marathon. A week before that, there’s the Thunder Over Louisville, which is called the world’s largest fireworks display and air show.
In the week running up to the Derby, you can watch the Pegasus Parade along Broadway, and the Great Steamboat Race.
Aside from race day, and the weeks running up to it, there are many other attractions in Louisville. Art galleries, like the Speed Art Museum at the University of Louisville, and those on Market Street, are great for browsing. Science and history can be explored at buildings like the Louisville Science Centre, the Louisville Slugger Museum, and the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. Music, performing arts and ballet are all on offer at The Louisville Ballet, and the Kentucky Centre for the Performing Arts, among others. You can even visit Fort Knox from Louisville, or take a tour of the Mammoth Cave National Park.
Make sure you sample Derby Pie – a pecan pie with chocolate, and mint juleps, while you’re in Louisville, both of which are on offer at many local eateries, and stay in the Hyatt Regency Louisville, near the Convention Centre, the Ramada Downtown, or any one of the many other hotels in the city.
