New York City, known as the Big Apple, is situated on the Hudson River, and has everything to offer her many visitors.
Known as NYC, the Big Apple and the city that never sleeps, New York City is the largest city in the United States, and probably it’s most famous. The city is on the Hudson River, and there are five boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. It’s a huge, sprawling metropolis, and it’s one place that everyone should try to visit at least once. John F Kennedy Airport, Newark, and La Guardia, as well as several smaller airports, make getting into New York from elsewhere in the US, or abroad, very easy. Metrocards let you use the bus and subway system, and of course, New York is full of yellow cabs, so getting around in this huge city is surprisingly easy. The Staten Island Ferry is a mode of transport and a tourist attraction, has featured in movies, and offers a great view of the statue of liberty and the harbor. There are also water taxis, to parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn and New Jersey. The Statue of Liberty must be the biggest attraction in New York City, and is a must see. Brooklyn Bridge is another and it’s easy to walk across it in about half an hour. Times Square is another well known attraction, with restaurants, huge interactive billboards and other attractions, and Central Park is the place to go to cycle, roller blade, feed ducks, and ice skate or just walk around. It is huge though, so you may want to consult a local or a map for specific attractions! Taking the trip to the top of the Empire State Building to see the city from a bird’s eye view is another must do, and although the World Trade Centre is gone, many people still visit Ground Zero as it’s become known to pay their respects to the victims of the September 11 attacks. Where art is concerned, New York is probably one of the best cities in the world to visit. A trip to the Guggenheim, the MoMa and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at the very least, should be a part of your itinerary, although there are many other museums and galleries to explore. Broadway is another New York landmark, and taking in a show on this famous street is another great way to find out more about the city, although Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and other famous institutions do compete for attention! As you would imagine, there are restaurants catering to every taste, in every cuisine, and at every price range throughout the city, but there are a few foods that are so quintessentially New York that you have to try them. One is the New York hotdog, bought from a street vendor, with onions, mustard, ketchup and sauerkraut, and another is the New York bagel. New York deli sandwiches are famous, and huge, and Katz’s Deli is the most famous place to get one. Hotel accommodation in New York is prolific, but often expensive. With so many areas and districts, and so many places of interest, as well as every major hotel chain represented, where you stay is really a matter of what your budget is, and what you need. You’ll find everything from the very basic to the super luxurious in the city, so the sky really is the limit.
