Portland, Oregon, known locally as the city of roses, has much in the way of attractions for her visitors.
Portland, Oregon, is a modern, urban city, around seventy miles from the Pacific, and affectionately known by locals and visitors as the ‘city of roses.’ The city is well laid out though, and is smaller than it seems – in fact, driving around twenty miles from the downtown CBD will see you in the country. In spite of this compact nature, the city of Portland offers a variety of attractions to the visitor. One of the best, especially if you’re travelling with kids, and it’s summer, is the Salmon Street Springs – a computer controlled water feature that is made up of hundreds of water jets, operating in ever changing patterns. Portland is also divided into a variety of neighborhoods, each with a distinct personality. For instance, the Pearl District has become a hip area of the city, with many great restaurants, open squares where you can people watch, and visit the famous Powell’s book store, most of which are housed in renovated warehouses. Sellwood is a historic haven in the city, with grand old houses and antique stores, while Hollywood, the area around the Hollywood theater, is famous for it’s arty atmosphere, and the Hollywood market, as well as the theatre itself, which shows a wide range of movies. Grotto Gardens, in the Northeast of the city, are a tranquil, green oasis in the city, filled with reflection pools, the amazing statue of St Francis of Assissi and other spiritual attractions, and in winter, they are lit up. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon, or a romantic evening. Of course, this is the city of roses, and in June, you find out why. It’s in June that Portland hosts the Portland Rose Festival. Of course, if you’re not in the city in June, you can still visit the Portland International Rose Test Gardens all year round. There’s a lot more to see in Portland too – from the world’s smallest park to museums, art galleries, live music venues like Jimmy Mak’s Jazz, and many others. While you explore the attractions this city has to offer, you will want comfortable accommodation. Luckily, this is well provided, in the form of hotels like the Marriott Portland City Centre, the Embassy Suites Portland Downtown and many other well known hotels, in the heart of the downtown area and throughout the city.
