Savannah, Georgia, is one of the few cities in Georgia that managed to escape the ravages of the civil war. Thanks to this, it’s a fine example of antebellum architecture, and charm, and retains a historic feel.
River Street is one of the most well known in the city, and this cobble stoned walk way is typical of the city of Savannah. There are plenty of shops and restaurants on the street, and the famous statue of the Waving Girl towards the east end of the street, and it is linked to the rest of the historic district.
Author Johnny Mercer, who wrote ‘The Book’ is buried here, in the Bonaventure Cemetery, and the adaptation, called ‘The Movie’ was filmed in Forsyth Park, another attraction in Savannah. Whether you choose to look out for scenes from the film, or just admire the fountain, it’s a great place to spend the day.
If you’re in Savannah in October, you’ll also be in time for a film themed attraction of a different sort – the Savannah Film Festival, and there are several other celebrations throughout the year.
There are plenty of historic squares to explore too, like Wright Square, also known as courthouse square, one of the oldest in the city, and many others, all with a unique history and all with several attractions. For those who’d rather experience historic activities than look at historic buildings, a trip on the Savannah River Queen, a traditional river boat, is a must do.
Food and drink is a big attraction in Savannah, and the city is known as the ‘Hostess City of the South’ so make sure you visit pubs like Churchills and the Rail Pub, and dine at down home style restaurants like Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House.
Accommodation options in Savannah range from modern chain hotels to historic options, but the Hyatt Regency, on the water, is a great choice, and the Desoto Hilton, built on the location of the former Desoto hotel that burned down, offers historic charm.
