Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona, and the most famous, with a fascinating history, having been populated by humans for about 10,000 years.
Tuscon is not only the second largest city in Arizona, but one of it’s most famous. It’s also got a fascinating history – having been populated by humans for over ten thousand years, and it’s well worth taking the time to explore this history when you are in town. The Mission San Xavier del Bac is a great start for exploring that history – built in the late 1700’s, it’s recently been restored to it’s original color and Spanish architectural glory. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is another great place to explore Tuscon – in this case, the natural history. It’s a huge desert park, filled with all kinds of animals, from hummingbirds in the walk in aviary to black bears, and is an awesome place to wander around. Saguaro National Park, on the fringes of the museum, is an eerie place to visit. It’s the largest forest of the famous Western cacti in the world. Tuscon Botanical Gardens, on the other hand, is filled with lush greenery that’s completely opposite to the desert surroundings. In winter, you can explore the geological riches of the area, when the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase, when collectors and enthusiasts from around the world descend on the city to swap, admire and enjoy the mineral heritage. 4th Avenue is one of Tuscon’s hot spots for nightlife, and if you do make a trip to the area after dark, make sure you visit local institutions like The Surly Wench and O’Malleys. Congress Street is another hotspot, and the club called Congress draws those who love to dance, so if you’re energetic, that’s the place to go. Hotels range from the budget friendly to more up market like the Hyatt Place Tuscon Airport, or the more centrally located Comfort Suites Sabino Canyon, or, if it’s luxury you want, consider the Tanque Verde Ranch, which combines luxury, like spa treatments, with outdoor activities like guided horse rides! Camping is another popular activity in Tuscon, and there are several great parks and campsites, like the Catalina State Park, where you can choose to rough it if you prefer the outdoors. The famous ghost town – Tombstone – is also just outside the city, so make sure that you plan a trip if you are going to be in town.
