Turkey has an enjoyable activity for everyone. Beach fans can enjoy the water sports and seaside environ of Antalya while rafting in the rivers of the northern forests, mountaineering in the central highlands, hunting and spelunking can be enjoyed by nature lovers. The country also has opportunities for sea turtle observation along the coastal areas, hot air ballooning, gliding sports, sky diving, golf and javelin games. The famous Silk Road is there to be explored, while you can indulge in amusing oil wrestling games. The presence of mountains in Turkey’s eastern and Mediterranean areas means a lot of winter sports like skiing, snow shoeing and dog sledding can be enjoyed courtesy of ski resorts. After a day exploring the country’s natural delights, you can relax at any of the country’s thermal baths and spas. Istanbul in Turkey is the world capital of the Ottoman and Byzantine empires. The city’s main architectural sights include the impressive Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern. Also worth looking at is the Dolmabahçe Palace, the Galata Tower, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar, and the Pera Palas. The city has quite a few museums as well. Other architecturally and historically important sites in Turkey include the sites of Ephesus, Troy and Pergamon which are major cities in the earth’s historic past. There is also the House of Virgin Mary, Pamukkale, Hierapolis and Trabzon with the old Sümela Monastery. Konya, Didyma, the Church of Antioch from the Bible and Mardin’s religious sites should not be missed. Cappadocia is home to ruined cities and beautiful landscapes. The city of Ankara boasts several cultural sites as well. The Anıtkabir museum and the Atakule Tower are major landmarks in the city while archaeological sites like the Citadel, Roman Theatre and Bath and the Temple of Augustus provide great insight into Turkey’s history. Museums such as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, the Ethnography Museum and the Painting and Sculpture Museum along with the Museum of the War of Independence can be visited as well. Ederne city represent’s the second largest capital of the Ottoman Empire with sights like the Selimiye Mosque, the Three Balconies Mosque, the Museums of Islamic Arts and Archaeology and the Karaağaç Quarter. The city of Bursa has several mosques, the notable Green Tomb and a nice skiing resort and national park while Izmir is famous for the clock tower in Konak Square, its beaches, the Kadifekale and the Agoran remains of the Roman Empire. The famous Mevlana Museum and Mausoleum of Rumi as well as the Seljuk Palace remains can be seen in Konya and Sinop is a city with remarkable ancient fortifications. The city of Tranzon has the Sumela monastery cut majestically in the cliff face and the Aya Sofya Museum. In Turkey, the museums offer a great deal in terms of historical collections and archaeological finds. Worth visiting are the Aegean museums like the Turolian Park, Open Air Museum, The Open - Air Museum (Acik Hava Muzesi) (Dinar) and the Turkish Bath Museum. Black Sea Museums such as the Aslan Torunlar Museum and the Ikiztepe Archeological Site should not be missed. Turkey hosts many traditional festivals, cultural events in music and sports and a number of feasts each year. Major highlights are the Sunnet of Hussein Erol, the Camel Wrestling Championship in January and ANZAC Day. Istanbul hosts a lively Grand Bazaar throughout the year while Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling occurs in June and the Mevlana Festival in December. March sees the Ankara International Film Festival, October the Istanbul Art and Book Fairs and International Istanbul Jazz Festival in July. The city also hosts a Film Festival in April, a theatre festival in May and a music festival in June.
Turkey Weather
Due to its diverse topography and latitudinal influences, Turkey does not have any one distinctive climatic type. A Mediterranean climate persists at the Aegean and Mediterranean Coasts where summers are hot and dry and winters are cold and rainy with heavy snow only in mountainous regions. A subtropical oceanic climate is present in the eastern Black Sea area while the western section has a colder oceanic climate. The interior areas have hot summer periods with relatively cool nights and long, cold winters. Areas near the Syrian border have an arid climate with negligible rainfall at summer.

Turkey has several luxurious five star hotels, most of which can be found in Istanbul overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Some of the favourites include the Mardan Palace with its welcoming appearance, the Ritz Carlton Istanbul which sits over the Bosphorus Strait, the majestical Ceylan International and the A’jia Hotel on the waterfront. The Swisshotel The Bosphorus can be found next to the Dolmabahce Palace in Besiktas whereas the Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul represents one of the residencies of the last Ottoman Sultan.
