Some 8 kms south from the town of Fethiye which is in the southwestern part of Turkey, the Ghost Town of Kayakoy can be found. In this tourist destination, thousands of rundown houses and other ruins lie in the hillsides creating a unique landscape. The houses don’t have roofs and windows anymore but their walls and floors are still intact. These houses are also neatly arranged and positioned in a way that not a single house blocks the view of another house. Aside from houses, there is an old fountain, schools, chapels and churches. The Kayakoy Ghost Town is a declared museum village by the Turkish government.


This ghost town used to be the home of thousands of Greek-speaking Christians who came to Turkey way back in 13th century. Here, they established a stable community through trading and craft making. The town has thousands of Greek houses, 14 chapels and two Greek Orthodox Churches along with some schools. However in 1923, in virtue of a population exchange agreed by the Greek and Turkish governments, the Greeks in Kayakoy were relocated back to Greece in exchange for Turks living in Greece to go back to Turkey. As the Greeks left their village, the Kayakoy Ghost Town was born.


There are many tour groups that can bring visitors to the Kayakoy Ghost Town. The scenic view of the place adds to its charm as a popular tourist attraction. There are vendors on the streets selling many souvenir items which are usually things left by the Greeks in their houses in the village. Visitors can take a hike or do horseback riding during their tour.


The town and the neighboring villages practice organic farming and nearby guesthouses and bungalows serve organic food to their guests. There is a small grocery store near the Ghost town but no other facility like ATM machines. In the neighboring Kaya Valley, there are cottages available but visitors can go to major villages and towns for more hotel and accommodation options with more facilities.
