One of the great attractions in the town of Reading, is the Reading Abbey Ruins, nearly a millenium old, and the Forbury Gardens that surround it are beautiful.

Reading, in Berkshire, is a town dating back to medieval times, with interesting historic sights. Getting to Reading involves a flight to London, and a half hour train trip, but once you are there, buses, taxis and walking will take you to all the main attractions.
The Reading Abbey Ruins, which are nearly a millennium old, are well worth a visit, and the Forbury Gardens that surround it have been recently restored, and are a beautiful, restful spot for a afternoon stroll. The Museum of Reading will tell you more about the town’s history, from Roman times, and is free to the public.
Silchester, the local name for the Roman town known as Calleva Atrebatum, is less than ten miles from the town, and while there is little but foundations, the city walls, an amphitheater and a medieval church, it’s still a fascinating place to visit.
The Thames runs through Reading, and there are many riverside options for entertainment. You could take a river boat cruise with Salters Steamers, or walk along the Thames to either to Tilehurst or Sonning.
Whatever you do though, make sure you time your visit in time for the Reading Festival in August, which is one of the world’s biggest music festivals. Restaurants and pubs abound of course, like most English towns, but for a taste of traditional food and beverages, try the Butler in Chatham Street, or visit the Hobgoblin for thousands of ales and beers.
The Crowne Plaza in Reading is probably the best place to stay, and since it’s owned by the Prince of Wales, it has royal connections too.
